Red Sox sign Carlos Delgado to minor league deal

The banged-up Boston Red Sox have signed free of charge agent slugger Carlos Delgado with a minor league agreement.

The 38-year-old Delgado has not performed from the majors because May perhaps 2009 to the New York Mets. He has had two hip surgeries since then.

Delgado is set to report to Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday. He performed winter ball in Puerto Rico in the offseason previous to hip difficulties slowed him.

Delgado has 473 job house runs.

Boston initial baseman Kevin Youkilis had season-ending surgery on his thumb Friday and Mike Lowell took his spot.

Delgado worked out for your Red Sox on Friday at Yankee Stadium and manager Terry Francona says he swung the bat well. But Francona cautioned Saturday that it is too early to project what to expect from Delgado.

Delgado, 38, has not played within the majors considering May 2009 with the Mets. He has had two hip surgeries considering.

Delgado, who has 473 profession house runs, will go to Class AAA Pawtucket (R.I.) Sunday. He played winter ball through the offseason in Puerto Rico.

Youkilis is out for your year or so having a thumb injury.
